Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT), located in Pantnagar, Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand, is India’s first agricultural university and a pioneer in integrating agricultural education, research, and extension. Established in 1960 with technical collaboration from the University of Illinois (USA), the university was envisioned as a model for rural development and has since played a central role in shaping India’s agricultural progress. Spread over 12,661 acres, GBPUAT is often regarded as the “Harbinger of the Green Revolution in India.”
The university comprises several constituent colleges, including the College of Agriculture, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, College of Technology, and College of Fisheries Science. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across disciplines such as agricultural engineering, biotechnology, food technology, animal husbandry, and home science. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on training, research-based learning, and fieldwork, ensuring that graduates are equipped with both technical and practical expertise.
Research and innovation form the cornerstone of GBPUAT’s identity. The university hosts numerous research stations and laboratories dedicated to crop improvement, soil and water management, irrigation engineering, and pest control. Its Department of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering is particularly known for advancements in water conservation, watershed management, and sustainable irrigation practices. Collaborations with national and international organizations, including ICAR, World Bank, and various agricultural universities, further strengthen its research output and policy impact.
GBPUAT also operates an extensive extension education network that connects modern agricultural practices with rural communities. Through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), training programs, and demonstration farms, the university disseminates knowledge to farmers and promotes sustainable agricultural growth across Uttarakhand and neighboring states.
The campus offers excellent facilities, including hostels, libraries, laboratories, sports complexes, and experimental farms. With a lush green environment and a vibrant student community, the university fosters holistic development alongside academic excellence.
In essence, G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology stands as a cornerstone of India’s agricultural education system. By combining teaching, research, and outreach, it continues to nurture skilled professionals and innovative solutions that drive agricultural modernization and rural development across the nation.
